Visible Belonging is a socio-artistic photography project by Amatörfotografklubben i Helsingfors and NextGenAFK. It brings together young photographers from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds to explore a simple but difficult question: who gets to feel visible, recognised and at home in the city?
Through street photography, workshops, photo walks, exhibitions and collaborative artistic experiments, participants document Helsinki from their own perspectives. The project gives young people space to develop their visual voice, work with others and take part in producing public cultural events, instead of remaining only an audience for them. This continues AFK’s work to create more self-directed opportunities for younger photographers and to connect photographic practice with questions of participation and society.
The goal is to build a multicultural photographic community in Helsinki where different experiences of the city can coexist and become publicly visible. The work is presented locally and through international collaborations, giving young photographers opportunities to meet audiences, other artists and photographic communities beyond Finland.
Your donation helps cover practical costs such as materials, printing, exhibition production, workshops, travel and access to photographic equipment. In fairly common economic terms, photographs cannot print, transport, or hang themselves.
